One day, by chance, in the vastness of the online world, I came across the image of a boy or girl, or perhaps just the impression of such a figure. What drew me in the most were the eyes—two eyes that seemed to speak directly to me. They carried an aura beyond description, a weight that defied words.

Then, suddenly, the portrait became something mutable. I captured the image and commanded Generative AI to endlessly replicate it, as though creating echoes from another dimension. These faces, alike yet distinct, emerged swiftly, like instant photos from a Photomatic machine. And in that moment, I felt something unexpected. The gaze that had initially connected with me—those two lights—began to split, to multiply, returning as an even greater light, illuminating every face, as though forming the very structure of the universe itself.

In the repetition of this process, I found myself questioning existence. The boy or girl—whoever they were or weren’t—had never existed, and yet, they might have existed in infinite forms. These portraits, strange and unsettling, stirred a nebulous sense of ambiguity. From lethal purity and innocence to something eerily violent, they encapsulated every possibility, every narrative. Along the blurred boundary of these faces, countless things lay torn and scattered. Who are they? Who are we? And where, if anywhere, do we come from?
